Miller Opie

Co-founder, 3HD•design

With an eclectic and very artistic background, Miller has had the opportunity to pursue a variety of creative paths.

After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design, she designed jewelry for a number of well-known designers, including Ralph Lauren. She started her own jewelry business, creating designs in sterling silver for museum stores and galleries across the U.S. and in Australia and Japan. With these one-of-a-kind pieces, she won several design awards and exhibited in the country’s most prestigious juried craft and trade shows, including the Smithsonian Craft Show and the American Craft Council Shows.

Miller then went on to use her craft skills as a Style Editor at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. Initially, her responsibilities included creating, producing and teaching Martha craft projects for the TV show; appearing alongside Martha in show segments; and producing many New York-based installations. Miller then moved to the Martha by Mail catalog, where she expanded her design expertise to home-keeping (storage), bedding, tabletop and decorative accessories.

Her next step was Head Designer at Pottery Barn Kids, where she gained an in-depth understanding of competitive pricing structures and sourcing product overseas. Her strength was creating collections of unique product that layered onto the core product already established by the brand. By working directly with the manufacturers, she was able to have these unique items brought to life with a much shorter development time line. This translated into fashionable and seasonable product in the stores faster than usual.

Miller was then hired by Sears holdings Corporation as Design Director, where she worked side-by-side with Touré Claiborne to create the Ty Pennington sTYle Brand and many other in-house brands. She created the design department, defined all of the brands and helped to make Sears a home fashions shopping destination. Her diverse background and experiences in design and business have inspired her to create 3HD•design with her partners.

Miller lives in Chicago with her husband David who is an illustrator and art professor and their dog, Poppin.
